I’ve been really lucky; I’ve never had to worry about fleas when it comes to Janice and Leroy. Somehow, it seems as though they’ve always gotten a pass.

That said, though, I know that sometimes people do have trouble with fleas or, perhaps more correctly stated, their dogs have trouble with fleas.

So, if you’re looking for the best flea collars for your dogs, I do have some suggestions.

There are a lot of different options out there. In a bit, I will tell you about some of the ones that I think are the best. First, though, let’s talk about flea collars in general.

How Does a Flea Collar Work?

Fleas are nasty little things that grab onto your dog and feed on his blood. Flea infestations are beyond nasty and will make your dog scratch like crazy. A flea collar can protect your dog from this type of discomfort.

There are two basic types of flea collars for dogs. One type emits a flea-killing gas, but it will only work on fleas that are already on your dog, or in the vicinity. The other type of flea collar holds medication that will seep into your dog’s skin, and is far more effective.

One thing that you have to keep in mind about flea collars for dogs is that if you have visited your veterinarian, and he or she has prescribed an anti-flea medication, you shouldn’t use a flea collar. If you do, harmful medications could build up in your dog, and the flea collar could cause a lot more harm than good.

Remember That They’re Not for Humans

The other thing that you have to keep in mind when it comes to flea collars for dogs is that they’re made for your dog – not for you. So if you get toxins from flea collars on your hands, and then you wipe your eyes or put your fingers in your mouth, you could get sick. Make sure that you always wash your hands after handling a flea collar!

Other pets can also be harmed by your dog’s flea collar, so keep it away from cats, hamsters and other animals.

What to Look For

When you’re looking for a flea collar for your dog, one of the most important things you should consider is size. It’s important that your dog isn’t able to reach down and gnaw on the collar, thereby ingesting toxins. You want to make sure that the collar isn’t big enough for your dog to chew on but also not so small that it makes him uncomfortable.

Stay Safe

You have to remember that flea collars for dogs contain toxic chemicals – insecticides – that work to eliminate fleas. Generally speaking, a flea collar will not contain enough insecticide to harm your dog. Check the active ingredients, though; some are safer than others.

The Best Flea Collars

That said, here are my recommendations for the best flea collars for dogs.

1. Seresto Flea and Tick Collar for Small Dogs[easyazon_image align=”right” cart=”n” cloak=”y” height=”110″ identifier=”B01GK2Q2PI” locale=”US” localize=”y” nw=”y” src=”https://SimplyForDogs.com/public_html/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/51MXVigkz0L.SL110.jpg” tag=”natur0da-20″ width=”110″ type=”image” link_id=”1612″]

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B01GK2Q2PI” locale=”US” nw=”y” tag=”natur0da-20″ cart=”n” cloak=”y” localize=”y” popups=”n” type=”link” link_id=”1613″]Saresto Flea and Tick Collar[/easyazon_link] has been on the market for a long time, and it’s very effective – up to 8 months. It kills not just fleas but ticks, as well, and it’s waterproof, too, so you can leave it on your dog when you bathe him.

2. 4 in 1 Dog Flea and Tick Collar by Facilla[easyazon_image align=”right” cart=”n” cloak=”y” height=”73″ identifier=”B01DMQEOL4″ locale=”US” localize=”y” nw=”y” src=”https://SimplyForDogs.com/public_html/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/41EEmq0sCL.SL110.jpg” tag=”natur0da-20″ width=”110″ type=”image” link_id=”1614″]

This [easyazon_link identifier=”B01DMQEOL4″ locale=”US” nw=”y” tag=”natur0da-20″ cart=”n” cloak=”y” localize=”y” popups=”n” type=”link” link_id=”1615″]nylon flea collar[/easyazon_link] works very well for medium or small size dogs, adjusting from 21-30 cm.

This is a nylon collar that is most suitable for a small or medium dog. It is adjustable, ranging from 21 to 30 centimeters in diameter.

It is a simple collar and has an easy clip attachment for quick removal. The nylon is fairly tough, but because it’s not reinforced, you really can’t expect it to stand up to a whole lot of abuse.

It emits a gas that kills fleas and larvae, and works for about four months, which is really good because it doesn’t just kill the bugs; it kills the larvae, as well. You will have to take it off during bathing, though, as it’s not waterproof.

3. The [easyazon_link identifier=”B0043XE6ZA” locale=”US” nw=”y” tag=”natur0da-20″ cart=”n” cloak=”y” localize=”y” popups=”n” type=”link” link_id=”1617″]Virbac Preventic Collar[/easyazon_link] isn’t exactly a flea collar; it actually targets ticks, which can be just as big a problem. It contains a chemical that starts working right away, and keeps on working for up to three months. Vets recommend that you use this collar in combination with flea treatment.

These are all good flea remedies. However, I would be doing you a disservice if I didn’t tell you that the best flea remedies are the ones that your vet recommends. There are any number of flea remedies out there, but your vet always knows best, so ask him or her which remedy is best for your dog.

The Final Word

Fleas are just beyond nasty, and if your dog has them, then you’re going to want a remedy. There are remedies available without a veterinary prescription, but my take on it is that you get what you pay for. If you want a really good flea remedy, talk with your vet and find out what he or she recommends.
