4 of the Best Dog Car Hammocks

I don’t know about you, but I’ve never bought a new vehicle, and I probably never will. When I first moved out of my parents’ home many, many years ago, I didn’t really have much choice. I had to buy used, and most of the time, what I could afford was what is commonly known as a “beater.” I mainly considered my cost of driving, and asked myself, “Which is the better buy – one $20,000 car, or ten $2,000 cars? Maybe even a hundred $200 cars?”

Cars were a lot cheaper back then.

Then, I’d consider repairs. I learned how to do a lot of things myself. In fact, I learned so much that today, I could probably replace ball joints, tie rod ends, control arms and brakes on just about any make or model, one-handed and blindfolded. Swapping out an engine, though, I might want to do with both hands and my eyes on the project.

You can probably figure out where I’m going with this: the cars I bought in the “lean” years, I didn’t worry about protecting. I’d happily toss a dog in the backseat, or let him ride up front – wherever he felt most comfortable. Heck, I once even transported a Jersey calf in the backseat of a Ford Taurus as a favor for a buddy. Another time, I transported a cage full of laying hens for the same friend, and believe me, you don’t even want to think about what they deposited in my backseat! I’m sure the stench was still there even when I junked the car a year later.

These days, I still don’t buy new, but I’m able to afford a better sort of used vehicle, so I kind of like to keep my rigs looking and smelling good. Of course, I still haul dogs around; after all, a drive isn’t really much fun without my two best friends! But I worry a little more about protecting my upholstery, because now, when I’m ready to switch vehicles, I usually have something that has a bit of resale value, as opposed to something that I just… well, throw away.

Another Famous Ash Digression!

There I go again with a lengthy digression before even trying to get to the main point, but you guys are used to that by now, right?

The point I was meandering toward was that if you care about your vehicle, you’ll probably want to consider some way of protecting your upholstery when traveling with dogs. One of the best ways to do that is with a dog car hammock.

What Is a Dog Car Hammock?

A dog car hammock is simply a device that protects your backseat. You might have a dog that is prone to car sickness, and if that’s the case, you’ll know that the barf will be deposited on the surface of the hammock, not on your upholstery. Maybe your dog chews on seat belts, in which case, the best way around that is a dog car hammock. Even if your dog is simply prone to shedding, a dog car hammock will still protect your backseat. Personally, I’ve never yet found a vacuum cleaner that would get rid of all the dog hair, but with a dog car hammock, you can usually just toss the covering in the washer and you’ll never have to worry about hair forever sticking to your vehicle’s upholstery.

The best dog car hammocks work as a sort of sling; they don’t exactly hang, but they attach in such a way that they cover both the backseat and the rear part of the driver’s and passengers’ seats. In other words, even though they don’t really hang, they still cover every surface in the back of your vehicle.

The best dog car hammocks are made out of material that is both chew-resistant and waterproof. They’re not usually all that expensive. In fact, you can find them for under $20, which is considerably less than you’d pay for even one single professional auto detailing if your dog should happen to throw up, or deliver something from his other end that you don’t want to deal with yourself.

In addition to protecting against messes, the best dog car hammocks are very useful for other purposes, like keeping your dog from trying to invade the front seat by climbing over the console. Obviously, this could be dangerous! Now, granted, even the best dog car hammock is not going to stop a really determined dog from jumping over the console and into the front, but it does provide a bit of an obstacle. It also makes it easier to correct the behavior.

If you have a dog that isn’t all that fond of car travel (they do exist, although I have to say I’ve never met one!), a car hammock can create a “safe space.” You can put your dog in the hammock, give him a blanket and a toy, and you have a space that works very much like a crate – a place where a dog feels safe and is able to relax.

Finally, although even the best dog hammock is not a substitute for a dog seatbelt, if you should happen to be in a collision, the hammock will provide some level of protection for both you and your dog; he’ll be less likely to bounce around and possibly injure himself, or you.

How to Use a Dog Car Hammock

The best dog car hammocks are really easy to use. Mainly, they just attach over the headrests of the front and backseats. To get the maximum use out of your dog car hammock, though, you should try to keep it clean. That’s pretty easy; you can usually just hose it off, or hand wash it with unscented detergent, rinse it and hang it to dry. If you have a big washing machine, some of the best dog car hammocks can even be machine washed.

If your dog is a bit skittish about trying new things, I’d recommend washing the hammock before using it; sometimes, when they’re new, they have a sort of “funny” smell. Washing will get rid of that strange odor, and then you can toss in a blanket that your dog has been using to make it smell more pleasing to him. You can also spread the hammock out over your dog’s regular bed and let him sleep on it before you actually transfer it to your vehicle.

Dog Car Hammocks

If your dog is prone to vomiting or “potty accidents” when travelling, the best dog car hammocks will clean up easily. If odor is a problem, you can add a bit of hydrogen peroxide to your detergent; it neutralizes odors. Make sure to rinse thoroughly, though.

Now, moving right along, let’s take a look at my recommendations for the best dog car hammocks.

The 4 Best Dog Car Hammocks

I had a hard time narrowing this down because there are a lot of really good dog car hammocks available, as well as other options for protecting your vehicle’s upholstery. I don’t think anyone really wants to read a dozen or more recommendations for the best dog car hammocks, though, so I’ve shortlisted them, and taken it down to just four. Here they are.

1. PlusPaws Pet Seat Cover & Hammock

The PlusPaws Pet Seat Cover & Hammock is one of the best dog car hammocks for large vehicles or trucks. It’s waterproof, and has reinforced straps that are designed to stand up to quite a bit of abuse. It’s also very well padded, which is a feature that is not always found in even the very best dog car hammocks. It sells on Amazon for a bit under $50.

2. Kurnco Waterproof Pet Hammock

The NAC&ZAC Waterproof Pet Hammock from Krunco is another of my top picks for the best dog car hammocks. It’s made from three layers of fabric: a soft top layer, underlayer, and a waterproof middle layer. The only thing I can find to criticize here is that the top layer is not waterproof, so that can make the Kurnco offering a little harder to clean than the PlusPaws, which would be a better choice for dogs who tend to vomit or mess when in the car. The NAC&ZAC is available on Amazon for just under $40.

3. Solvit Waterproof Car Hammock

The Solvit Waterproof Car Hammock is a very economical choice, a little under $17 on Amazon. Don’t let the low price fool you, though; you’ll get a lot of bang for your buck with this waterproof hammock that is also very nearly chew-proof. I think that how Solvit drives down the price is in that there’s no padding. If that’s not an issue for you and your dog, though, this dog car hammock will serve you well.

4. Animal Planet Water Resistant Doggie Hammock

Here’s another low-priced dog car hammock – under $15 on Amazon. However, as you can probably tell from the name, the Animal Planet Water Resistant Doggie Hammock is not waterproof – just water resistant. So if your dog is prone to barfing or peeing a lot while traveling, it might not be the best choice. In other ways, though, it’s a good choice; it will fit in just about any vehicle, and has adjustable straps so that if you need to move from one vehicle to another, you can still be assured of a good fit.

So, my friends, there you go – my four top picks for the best dog car hammocks.

The Final Word

When I’m travelling with Janice and Leroy, I don’t usually have to worry about them jumping up into the front seat, because they’re very well-behaved dogs. I do like to protect my upholstery, though, so I have invested in the PlusPaws seat cover and hammock, simply because Janice and Leroy are very big dogs, and this is the sturdiest of the best dog car hammocks I’ve reviewed. If you have a smaller dog, you might do very well with a less expensive hammock.

The best dog car hammock will not just protect your vehicle’s upholstery; it will also go some way toward protecting you and your dog if your best buddy is very resistant to wearing a doggie seatbelt. At a little under $50 for even the best dog car hammocks, and about half that for ones that are still perfectly adequate, it’s a good investment in terms of your dog’s comfort and safety, as well as ensuring that your vehicle will be nice and clean when you’re ready to trade it in or sell it.
