4 Indestructible Chew Toys for Pit Bulls

Pit Bulls just love to chew, and they also love ripping their toys into shreds. So if you have a Pitty, you might be wondering if there are any indestructible toys for Pit Bulls.  I would suggest that there probably are not. Indestructible toys for Pit Bulls are probably just about as nonexistent as they are for any other large breed that has very strong jaws. I have never been able to find a toy that Janice or Leroy couldn’t end up destroying, given a bit of time, but I have learned that some toys will last longer than others.

So, the first thing I can tell you about supposedly indestructible toys for Pit Bulls and other large breeds is don’t waste your money at the dollar store. Sure, you can buy a lot of toys for very little money, but they will last no time at all. Trust me, because I speak from experience. Janice and Leroy shred up those cheap toys in a matter of minutes. A more expensive toy from a reputable pet supply store will cost you more, but it’s simple math: which is better, five dollar store toys that last two days and cost you a dollar each, or one toy that costs you $15 but will last for at least a month?

When it comes to Pit Bulls and other large dogs, you’re definitely better off with toys that are more expensive, although not really indestructible. Chew toys for Pit Bulls also need to stave off boredom, and if your dog is just going, “Okay, shredded this one, shredded that one, shredded the other one,” he’s not really being entertained. In fact, he’s probably frustrated because the cheap toys are not providing him with much in the way of play value.

The Best Toys

So, what are the best chew toys for Pit Bulls? Well, if you read last week’s post, Boxer vs. Pit Bull, you probably know that there is one thing that I do not consider to be an appropriate chew toy for a Pit Bull – me. I am still in pain from the “Janice vs. Tiffany with Leroy on the periphery” fight. What doesn’t count amongst the indestructible chew toys for Pit Bulls? Ash. Ash is most definitely not indestructible.

Of course, in that situation, I suppose I wasn’t so much a “chew toy” as I was collateral damage. All the same, I got a really “up close and personal” view of the power of a Pit Bull’s jaws and a Boxer’s too, for that matter.

Anyway, back to my point. Pit Bulls chew very enthusiastically, and they love to bite, and because of that, they can turn almost any toy that you might choose for them into a huge mess of garbage in very little time. So, even though you will never really find truly indestructible toys for Pit Bulls, it’s important to find toys that will at least keep them entertained for a reasonable amount of time. Before talking about specific brands, let’s consider Pit Bull toys in general.

Pit Bull Toys Have to Be Strong

Strong dogs need strong toys. A Bichon Frise, toy poodle or Maltese might be content to snuggle with a small toy, toss it around a bit, and then fall asleep with the toy close by or gently held in their mouth. A Pit Bull, though, given a stuffed toy, is more likely to want to savage it. This poses two problems.

First of all, the toy is not going to last. Second, the shredded material could lodge in your dog’s throat and cause him to choke, or end up in his stomach or intestinal tract; in which case, he could end up needing surgery.

So, soft toys are not good for Pit Bulls. You’re better off with toys made of strong rubber. You might want to consider rubber toys that can be filled with yogurt or rubber that will entertain your Pit Bull and hold his interest while he tries to figure out how to get the good stuff out of the toy. Of course, there is the risk that he will just try to tear through the rubber, but most Pit Bulls will try to puzzle it out first.

For that matter, you don’t have to actually buy strong toys for your Pit Bull. I know a number of people who take old bed sheets and braid them together to make a kind of rope, and their Pit Bull will pull and chew on it for a long time before finally destroying it.

You can also buy rope toys, and again, although these will not be indestructible chew toys for Pit Bulls, they will last a long time. An added benefit is that the rope fibers will act almost in the same way as dental floss when they come into contact with the Pit Bull’s teeth; the dog will have a great time playing, and improve his dental health in the bargain.

Another benefit of rope toys, whether you make them yourself or buy them, is that they can be machine-washed.

You can also give your Pit Bull dental chews. These are tough toys that will give your dog hours of entertainment. Make sure to choose the large size, though, because anything that is too small will be destroyed in little time. The best toys for Pit Bulls will keep the dog entertained for a long time, so that he will be less destructive.

Why You Should Choose Nearly Indestructible Chew Toys for Pit Bulls

As I have already suggested, there are no such things as truly indestructible chew toys for Pit Bulls. You should, however, try to strive for nearly indestructible. This is because, as I have already mentioned, he could end up choking or having a blockage in his digestive tract. Toys that are too small can also be very dangerous for Pit Bulls; you need to be sure that any toy you offer your Pit Bull is big enough that he can’t swallow it. Think of it this way: you wouldn’t give a human baby a marble to play with, so don’t offer your Pit Bull a small ball. You should never give any dog a toy that might present a choking hazard.

Keep in mind, too, that even a “big enough” toy can endanger your dog. Toys with jagged edges should b avoided. Choose rings, balls, and rounded sticks.

No Bones!

I can’t begin to tell you how bad bones can be for your dog. I hear people say, “But he loves them, and I only give him knuckle bones!” and my immediate response is to think
“Great, you love him, but you’re still giving him something that could hurt him.”

There is no such thing as a “safe” bone. Any bone can splinter and lodge in your dog’s stomach, intestines or esophagus. Do not give your Pit Bull bones. Ever.

Now, the Best Toys

Having gone on and on about what you shouldn’t give your Pit Bull, I suppose I should offer some alternatives. So here are the toys that I think would be best for your dog.

1. Goughnuts Black Maxx Rubber Dog Ring

The Goughnut Black Maxx Rubber Dog Chew really is almost indestructible. It doesn’t look all that impressive, but it’s perfect for really heavy chewers. Dogs love the ring shape, and also appreciate the fact that they can take this toy anywhere. It’s perfect for games of “fetch” and will float in the pool. It even has a safety feature built in: the outside of the toy is black, and the inside is red. Once you see the red color, you’ll know that the toy is beginning to deteriorate and needs to be replaced.

If you’re looking for indestructible chew toys for Pit Bulls, this isn’t it. But again, as I’ve pointed out, I don’t think there is such a thing as a toy that a Pit Bull can’t destroy. This one comes close, though, and will last a long time.

2. West Paw Design Tux Dog Toy

This is one of my favorite stuffable toys. The West Paw Design Tux Dog Toy can be filled with bacon, peanut butter, or anything else that your dog loves. With its three-pronged shape, your dog will love tossing it around. I wouldn’t use this toy without supervising your dog, though, because there is always the possibility that a really aggressive chewer could pull off a large chunk and chew on it. There are tougher toys on the market, but this one is a lot of fun and will give your dog hours of pleasure. Just don’t leave him unsupervised.

3. Nylabone Dura Chew Bone

The Nylabone Dura Chew Bone comes in a variety of flavors, and is a very simple toy. It’s bone-shaped, very solid, and made of nylon so that it will stand up to even the most vigorous chewing. One of the features that I really like is that it is made with ridges and grooves that work to remove plaque from your dog’s teeth and improve the health of his gums. It comes in a number of flavors and sizes. Of course, for your Pit Bull, you will want to choose a large size.

The only downside to this toy is that there is a risk of splintering. This is the case with all nylon toys, so you will want to monitor your Pit Bull when he plays with this toy. If you notice that big pieces are breaking off of the toy, take it away from your dog and replace it. Rubber pieces will probably not hurt your dog, but nylon pieces could be harmful.

4. KONG Extreme Ball

You may have had people tell you that the Kong Extreme Ball cannot be destroyed. Believe me, it can. Boxers can destroy it. Rottweilers can destroy it. And Pit Bulls can most definitely destroy it, so if you think this is going to be one of those indestructible chew toys for Pit Bulls, pull back and regroup, because it’s not going to happen.

That said, KONG is known for making very durable rubber toys for dogs. If you think their products aren’t tough, then let me point out that they are what is used for training K9 units.

Is KONG tough? Yes. Is it Pit Bull-proof? No. Simply because nothing is. Your Pitty will get a lot of play out of a KONG Extreme Ball, though.

The Final Word

If you are looking for indestructible chew toys for Pit Bulls, stop right now. They don’t exist. You can make toys at home for your Pit Bull, though, and you can choose from a select group of commercial toys that will last a long time. Indestructible chew toys for Pit Bulls, though? Nope. Doesn’t happen. You can only do the best you can with toys that will last for a long time but not forever.
