How to Choose the Best Dog Boots for Winter

Thank God winter is almost over! I’m not kidding you; I’m up to HERE with it! The older I get, the more I hate winter.

I used to laugh at my parents with their “We can’t wait to retire to Florida” rants, and now, I totally get it. The older I get, the colder I get.

I’m pretty sure that Janice and Leroy feel it too, and that’s why, in spite of the fact that I’ve always kind of thought that dog booties were for sissies, I’ve been thinking about getting them some to get them through the cold weather.

I get it now that dogs might need booties to get through the cold weather. So even though this winter is nearly over, I think we should talk about the best dog boots for winter. For next year, if nothing else.

The Facts About Dog Boots

You’re not the only one who’s troubled by cold weather. It can be just as hard on your dog’s toes; they can dry out crack and even get frostbite, just the same as your toes do. Fortunately, there are a lot of booties out there that will help you to protect your dog’s feet.

The thing about dog boots for winter is that they don’t just keep your dog’s feet warm; they also provide stability and protect against irritation. They keep your dog safe from the problems that salt, sand and ice can cause, and they’re a lot sturdier than the boots that you might provide for other walks.

Dog Boots

So, what you need to know is what you and your dog will be doing out there in the inclement weather.

Keep in mind that when the weather is bad, your dog is going to be much more uncomfortable than he would be in good weather. You need boots that are made from sturdy material and are waterproof; you don’t want seeping, melting snow to get into the boots and make your dog chilled.

Also, think about fit and comfort; after all, when you buy shoes for yourself, you make sure that they fit properly and feel good when you walk. You should do the same for your dog. Choose a boot that fits well, and accommodates his foot, and is soft enough that it fits the shape of his foot. It should be easy to put on and take off but not loose enough that it will slip off during the walk.

Rubber Boots

Generally speaking, rubber boots are the best. They will protect your dog’s feet and keep them dry. They’re also very flexible. I’m most partial to the Pawz Waterproof Dog Boot, which not only keeps mud and wet off your floor, it also keeps your carpets and furniture safe.

Leather Dog Shoes

Leather dog shoes are also a good choice, and I really like Martin Boots for large dogs. The reason for that is that they’re really lightweight, even though they’re meant for big dogs. They also have a very nice lining so you can be sure that the boots will fit well.

Paw Protector Dog Shoes

I’m also really fond of Paw Protector Dog Shoes. They’re warm and comfy, and will keep your dog safe from snow and ice.

Staying In?

If you’re planning on staying inside with your dog, you might still consider some dog boots just to keep him warm. You don’t need thick soles, but you should consider the outer layer, which is what’s going to keep your dog warm. You don’t have to go nuts with keeping your dog safe from ice and snow, but he probably would still like to be warm.

Where to Buy?

It shouldn’t be hard finding somewhere to buy boots for your dog. There are any number of places where you can buy good dog boots for winter. You can get very stylish shoes, and very functional shoes. And it really doesn’t take much – just measure your dog and get the right fit.

First Time?

Don’t sweat it. You can just take your dog to the store and have him measured for his booties. Usually, it’s actually better to have your dog measured the first time around. You can also talk with someone at the store about what boots would be best for our dog.

Buying Online

A seasoned buyer can, of course, buy online. If you know what you’re doing, you can use keywords and find literally thousands of websites that are offering what you want to buy. Then, once you’ve narrowed down the search, you can figure out what you want to buy.

Winter isn’t easy on a dog’s feet. So if you find that your dog is reluctant to go out in the snow, it might be a good idea to buy him a pair o booties. Don’t’ worry about the fact that they might look a bit silly; the main thing is your dog’s comfort.

You want to feel comfortable in the cold weather, and so does your dog. So find the right boots that make him feel comfortable and warm when you’re out walking. There are lots of boots out there that can protect your best buddy’s toes; find the right pair, and use them.
